Hong Kong-based interior designer Joyce Wang has earned top honours at this year’s prestigious INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors. Competing alongside 60 other nominees in the category, the studio’s MOTT32 project was named World Interior of the Year 2014.
October 16th, 2014
Joyce Wang’s studio explored Hong Kong culture’s past and present with MOTT32, a Chinese restaurant within the basement of the Standard Chartered Building in Hong Kong’s Central district. The 10-person design team re-imagined its former life as a storage facility housing expensive family of a wealthy Chinese family. The space included remnants of forgotten antiques, Chinese propaganda, and custom-made industrial accents that double as furniture and light fittings.
Held at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands on 1 -3 October, INSIDE is the annual festival and awards programme celebrating the very best in interior design and architecture. According to INSIDE, this year’s judges came to a unanimous decision to select MOTT32 as the winner of the top award, overcoming tough competition. Other nominees included the new Christopher’s Restaurant in London and the redevelopment of the famous Bar Riviera in São Paulo.
“Winning the award means so much for our team.” says Joyce Wang. “It was an honour for us to be part of this project. We had reinvigorated a forgotten space in the very heart of Hong Kong, and through design, the project has elevated the sophistication of Chinese cuisine on a global platform.”
Joyce Wang also won the top prize in the Residential category for her Xintiandi Penthouse in Shanghai, China.
