HASSELL and Condensed’s recent installation in a Melbourne showroom was one of considerable scale and visual impact
August 28th, 2012
SPACE Furniture’s Church Street windows – which at the best of times frame stunning collections and classic design pieces – were given over to an artistic interpretation of the theme “ACTIVATE” as part of the Saturday in Design event program.
In execution, the soaring four-storey windows exposed a cascade of three-dimensional black “bubbles”, ranging in sizes, sporadically contained within crate-like cubes that juxtaposed the two elements, in both texture and colour.
Titled ’Frame Fill Wrap’, the impressive work is described by the collaborators as the ultimate deconstruction of a chair – essentially, a chair’s three basic elements playfully re-interpreted.
“FRAMED elements hold and support the FILLING as it tries to burst free from its constraints to inhabit the public skin, and extend to literally become WRAPPED in Space.”
Charged with designing an installation that would effectively engage and make best use of such a voluminous venue, the two contributors successfully created a flow within the showroom.
Such is the nature of the event; Saturday in Design presents the opportunity to bring together complementary brands in one display space.
In this instance with SPACE Furniture hosting Gaggenau, an efficient installation called for a binding element that would permeate the showroom, across all its levels, with a cohesive aesthetic.
Gaggenau, not ordinarily cohabitants of the large Richmond showroom, made best use of the out-of-context circumstance to demonstrate the proficiency of their conventional ovens, cook tops and steam oven that comprise the Gaggenau Mobile Kitchen.
Designed and manufactured by Gaggenau Germany, the concept display suite showcases the brand, allows guests to experience the products and enables live cooking demonstrations in a variety of settings.
In the truest demonstration of collaboration, two design-focussed brands came together in cooperation with two leading creative forces. The result has been an engaging take on the fundamental elements of industrial design.
