Unlike industries such as Oil and Gas or Chemical Processing, which face severe corrosion issues and have therefore developed comprehensive approaches to address it, the civil construction sector has something of a blind spot when it comes to corrosion. Even though it is a real and present issue, the codes and standards intended to address corrosion take only a minimalist approach and are viewed as inadequate. Given that effective corrosion management cannot only reduce the severity of the problem and cut costs, but importantly also improve the sustainability of construction projects, this state of affairs represents an opportunity lost.
What then is the most effective approach to corrosion management? What processes and methods should be undertaken to minimise the threat of corrosion at the design stage? And what can be done to alleviate the problem when it occurs?
