Set amidst in the enlivened Rosebery Engine Yards, Gelato Messina by Vie Studio is a slice of history with a twist in Sydney’s inner south. This gelateria serves up scoops of delectable ice cream, with a heaping helping of history and a sprinkle of mid-century flair.
The design story of Gelato Messina is as rich as its gelato, deeply rooted in the storied past of the site. Once a workshop for aristocratic slot machines, this site now boasts an Old-World pub vibe, complemented by mid-century design features. The gelateria is anchored by an 11-metre timber counter that pays homage to the artisanal legacy and showcases the gelato churner in the open kitchen, allowing patrons to witness the magic behind their treats.

Detailed with a custom profile that pays homage to the heritage features, the timber details along the counter front are an extension of the external facade. The exposed steel roof trusses, now serving as a striking ceiling feature, adopt adaptive reuse processes and evoke an industrial aesthetic.
This amalgamation of vintage and modern extends to the banquette seating, where wooden profiles echo the counter’s craftsmanship. Upon entrance, the preserved original floor tiles serve as a charming nod to the past, and the curved concrete design on the flooring sits sharply against vintage light fixtures continuing the nostalgic narrative.
