The three-day event, featuring luxury design and furnishings, will enable Chinese visitors to see the furnishing solutions showcased in Milan last April. Two exhibition streams will be featured: ‘Design’ (for products that marry function with innovation and good looks) and ‘xLux’ (for products that combine classical elegance with contemporary design).

The Salone organisers report that demand for ‘Made in Italy’ furnishings is steadily rising in China. Says Emanuele Orsini, President of Salone del Mobile.Milano Shanghai organiser Federlegno Arredo Eventi:

“The ability of Made in Italy furnishing to marry artisan quality with cutting-edge technologies and attentiveness to environmental concerns, is probably what has allowed us to attain even higher export quotas all over the world. China is no exception, with a growth rate from 2009 to 2018 nudging 500%.”

“Italy is, without doubt, the number one importer of furnishing to the Chinese market,” says Amedeo Scarpa, Director of the ICE (Italian Trade and Investment Agency) office in Beijing and Co-ordinator of the ICE offices in China and Mongolia.

He continues: “Exports of Italian furniture have risen by 13.34%, reaching a new high of 626 million USD in 2018. During the first 3 months of this year, Chinese imports from Italy grew 0.25%, for a value of 162 million dollars, despite the sharp fall in furniture imports from the major export countries. This is an extraordinary figure.”

It testifies to a strong, growing interest in the Italian lifestyle, he suggests.

“Sipping a glass of Italian wine, sitting on a unique Italian design sofa, while wearing exclusive Italian fashion accessories and so on, is increasingly what China’s Millennials aspire to.”
