Piero Lissoni’s 2016 design of the elegant Avio modular sofa takes on an informal and more flexible persona in its latest version unveiled recently at Milan Design Week.
The Avio Sofa System is an elegant collection of upholstered furniture designed by Piero Lissoni for Knoll. Launched in 2016, the Avio modular sofa system features a steel truss framework to support endless configurations of benches, two-seaters, three-seaters, chaise longues and tabletops. This contemporary and versatile sofa system has now evolved, with the solid and elegant design adopting a more relaxed and informal style expression.
Piero Lissoni’s design updates on the original Avio modular sofa system include an innovative patented mechanism for greater comfort, as well as asymmetry with the corner version offering a generously proportioned scalene triangle that serves as an end element to add to the informality. The concealed mechanism rotates the end seating element by 18° to enhance comfort levels for the user. Lissoni has also introduced the irregular end or corner element to slightly alter the precise, clean lines of the Avio, suggesting a more laidback vibe with perhaps a touch of whimsy.
The 2017 evolution of the Avio sofa system includes a compact version that retains all of the aesthetic appeal of the original and can fit into smaller spaces to offer an equally relaxing experience.
The load-bearing structure comprises a central beam made of tubular steel, with support points branching out for the seats, backrests and tables. Balancing functionality and aesthetics, the design plays on the contrast between the lightness of the thin frame and the generous volume of the leather or fabric-upholstered seats and back cushions, which incorporate variable density foam covered with polyester fibrefill to enhance comfort.
