Meet Cala, a family of armchairs designed by Doshi Levien for Kettal that brings a majestic presence outdoors and in.
Not so long ago outdoor furniture was synonymous with hardy, heavy-duty pieces that were more utilitarian than anything else. Let’s just say the expectations for outdoor furniture were low. But with the boundaries of our living spaces becoming increasingly blurry, our demands on outdoor furniture are increasing – it must not only be able to withstand the weather and elements, but also be able to wow friends and family.
Furniture brands worldwide have embraced this blurring of boundaries and catered to the demand by expanding their offerings of outdoor furniture to pieces that look and feel as good as indoor furniture. In this context, Kettal is ahead of its time. Founded in 1966 in Barcelona, the brand has collaborated with leading designers to produce exquisite outdoor furniture that (pun intended) would look completely at home indoors.
Case in point: the Cala club armchair. Designed by Doshi Levien (and recently joined by a sofa, dining chair and tables), Cala is a throwback to the iconic high-backed peacock rattan chair popular in the 1970s. Made with ropes woven onto an aluminium frame, Cala’s majestic latticed back provides support while maintaining contact with the natural elements.
Cala is suitable as both a dining chair and a lounge chair for the outdoors. Its frame, rope and cushion are available in a wide range of finishes, lending to virtually limitless colour variants to complement any setting. The base is available in two variants: a radial aluminium base and a four-legged teak base. The collection also includes an aluminium side table with either teak or marble top.
Kettal is available in Hong Kong from colourliving.
