The Be Like Utzon workshop, which is fittingly located at the Sydney Opera House, inspires participants to reconnoitre architectural innovation through playful design exercises.
July 15th, 2024
The Centre of Creativity at the Sydney Opera House recently hosted its second Be Like Utzon workshop, an ebullient and educational event inspired by the design raconteur of Jørn Utzon – the visionary behind the iconic Opera House. This workshop encouraged participants, whether beginners or seasoned design enthusiasts, to revel in the architectural history of the Sydney Opera House through a series of playful design exercises.
The Architecture Club, which organises these workshops, operates similarly to a tertiary-level architecture studio with a more relaxed atmosphere. Here, students have the opportunity to create and present their designs in a supportive environment of like-minded creators.
Participants were introduced to the innovative spherical solution that defines the distinctive shell structure of the Opera House. The workshop kicked off with an icebreaker activity where attendees were given an orange to either replicate the Opera House design or create their version using segments of the fruit. This activity described humorously as a “delicious and healthy” exercise, allowed participants to explore architectural concepts in a tangible and fun manner.
The next phase of the workshop posed the question What would Utzon do now? Participants were invited to engage in quick studies using basic stationery to explore curves, lines, arcs and vaults. These explorations led to the creation of more refined, presentation-quality models using metallic or clear cards.
A highlight of every Architecture Club workshop is the exhibition that follows, giving participants a chance to display their creations and celebrate their achievements within the inspiring setting of the Sydney Opera House. This experience not only fosters a sense of pride but deepens the participants’ appreciation for the architectural masterpiece they are emulating.
Whether you are an aspiring architect or simply passionate about design, these workshops promise to ignite your creativity and broaden your architectural perspective. The next workshop, “Utzon in the Forest,” scheduled for Saturday, August 17, 2024, will focus on balsa model making. Participants will draw inspiration from Jørn Utzon’s love for his local forest, biophilic geometry, and recent timber and bamboo architecture in Sydney and throughout Asia. Tickets are on sale now for this exciting event that blends creativity with architectural education, promising a memorable and enriching experience for all attendees.
