The Bentwood chair is timeless, elegant, eco-friendly – and available through James Richardson.
March 29th, 2011
Bentwood is the last word in classic, environmentally friendly design. It is sourced from 100% renewable forests and 100% recyclable.
The classic Thonet styled Bentwood chairs have been manufactured by TON in the Czech Republic since the 1850s, using the same technique of bending a piece of steamed solid wood.
In an era of robots and computer-controlled machines, Bentwood chairs are unique.
The famous chair no. 14 is considered the first chair to be designed for mass production within furniture-making history.
Chair no. 14 has minimal material and assembly demands, is light and is constructed with just 6 pieces and 10 screws, making it easily imported disassembled.
Approximately 80 million pieces have been produced to date, since manufacture of chair no. 14 commenced in 1859. Owning a Bentwood chair is owning a piece of design history.
James Richardson is the exclusive distributor of the Bentwood range and is TON’s second oldest customer in the world.
