Sustainable, innovative, responsible were the keywords driving Incorp’s design for Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM)’s Melbourne office.

Global projects firm Sinclair Knight Merz recently relocated their office from Armadale to the Melbourne CBD in a move that reflected a change in direction for the firm.
The new office space needed to encompass a more forward-thinking approach, provide room for company growth, meet sustainability targets and reflect the SKM brand.
“[We needed] to show that SKM are way ahead on sustainability, that they are open, connected, and don’t just give clients what they want but actively listen and give them what they need,” explains Janina Juhas, Design Manager at Incorp, who led the project with colleague Suzi Wedd.
The design was inspired by 3 key words which were felt to reflect the SKM brand – sustainable, innovative and responsible – incorporated subtly into the fit-out.
“It was fundamental that these were shown in a modest way,” Juhas explains.
Tactiles were used instead of adhesives for carpet installation, for example, and the team engaged with the base building owner early on in the project to ensure an energy efficient lighting system – contributing to the sustainability goals of the project.
“For innovation it was about learning from previous Green Star projects and making responsible choices,” Juhas adds.
In terms of responsibility, “one aspect and a major factor was the importance of re-use of furniture from SKM’s previous office.”
The result is a sensitively designed space where workers feel comfortable and connected to the brand.
“It’s about making somewhere for everyone to come back to, a home, and somewhere that is comfortable and nurturing and ultimately something that can grow with them,” Juhas explains.
“The direction is an ever-evolving one.”
The SKM project was a collaboration between Incorp Design Studio and SKM Design, Project Management and Environmental teams.
