The Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at Hangzhou Centre, designed by Avalon Collective, officially opened 1st September, 2024.

Located in Hangzhou’s bustling city centre, known for its Grand Canal and West Lake, the design of Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou draws inspiration from the city’s waterways, architecture and cultural heritage. The theme of water runs throughout the hotel, creating a tranquil experience for both business and leisure guests.

The overarching design concept – ‘The Theoretics of Water’ – reflects the city’s water-centric culture, infusing the spaces with a sense of calm and meditation. The key design elements include four thematic zones: INTERCONNECTED (Lobby), LAYERED (Function Venues), REFLECTION (Recreational Areas) and LIGHT & SHADOW (Guestrooms). These concepts manifest in modern and subtle ways throughout the property.

Upon entering the lobby, guests are welcomed by an installation reminiscent of Hangzhou’s willow trees and lotus flowers. This area serves as an intersection for people and ideas, much like the city’s waterways. The lobby’s double-height ceiling features wave-like designs inspired by Wu Guanzhong’s iconic art, setting a peaceful tone for the guest experience.

The function venues, including meeting rooms and ballrooms, are designed to be both versatile and serene. Light-filled spaces, layered with wave-like patterns and subtle details, encourage both social interactions and moments of quiet reflection. The Club Lounge extends this design approach, with seating arrangements resembling boats gently floating along a canal, offering a cozy and intimate setting.

In the recreational areas, guests experience a contrast between light-filled spaces such as the pool and gym and darker spa areas. Inspired by water’s reflections during different times of day, the atmosphere shifts from bright and revitalising to calm and grounded, allowing guests to unwind and rejuvenate.

The guestrooms emphasise the interplay between light and shadow, with designs inspired by the misty beauty of West Lake. The integration of water-themed elements creates a relaxing retreat, with thoughtful touches like illuminated bathroom screens displaying Hangzhou’s iconic Broken Bridge.

Through these carefully considered design elements, Four Seasons Hangzhou at Hangzhou Centre offers guests a contemporary and immersive journey that reflects the city’s deep connection to water. The hotel stands as a modern tribute to Hangzhou’s rich cultural and architectural heritage, seamlessly blending tradition and innovation.
