nendo picked 50 projects to mark a decade of work in a solo exhibition held in Tokyo.
February 2nd, 2012
In December last year, nendo celebrated a decade of work with an exhibition in Tokyo titled “50projects_25objects + 25spaces”.
The exhibits were picked from a list of 230 projects. What made it particularly meaningful, says nendo, was that most of the selected pieces were being shown in Japan for the first time.
The exhibition, which occupied 2 gallery spaces at the Roppongi AXIS Building, outlined the concepts and processes for each design.
Transparent, hollow carbonate sheets were stacked to make a wall in front of each item displayed. The resulting pixelated effect meant that visitors had to go around the back of each ’wall’ to view the work.
The degree of pixelation varied with the angle through which viewers looked through the polycarbonate, providing a constantly changing vision of the work as they moved around the gallery space. Some ’walls’ also overlapped, creating an exhibition environment in which the view changed like a kaleidoscope.
The studio says this exhibition gave them a great opportunity to review the projects they had done over 10 years and was also aimed at opening the way for further developments in the future.
For those who missed “50projects_25objects + 25spaces”, nendo is currently holding 2 exhibitions in Paris (at Carpenters Workshop Gallery and Pierre-Alain Challier), even while it is busy preparing for yet another for the Milan fair!
Watch for our upcoming interview with nendo’s Oki Sato.
