New to the INDE.Awards this year, The Graduate showcases the rising stars of the architecture world. The category which is open to fifth year architecture students that have been nominated by their course leader, showcases the projects entered as the final year submission to each students’ faculty.

There is no doubt that talent abounds in Australia and New Zealand architecture schools as the shortlisted group attest with innovative and detailed concepts presented for review. As the supporter of The Graduate, Alspec is helping to showcase future leaders of the profession – just as it plans its business and creates products for the architecture and design community for today and tomorrow.

Ross Baynham, National Specification Manager, Alspec was impressed with the entries saying, “The shortlist tells me that the future of design across the Indo Pacific region is in good hands for the foreseeable future.  Rather than considering personal glory or legacy, the shortlist is a collection of personal stories where community shines through. This collection of projects highlights a real acknowledgement of the past, taking lessons from the positives and tries to create a better future.”

With a diversity of projects presented, it is clear to see that the next generation of architects are passionate and engaged with sustainability, form, environment, connectivity and collaboration. Great foundations to work from in the years ahead and Bayham commented, “I expected to see visions for a sustainable future but the shortlist gives so much more than that. The shortlisted projects offer a discussion of inclusion, architectural diversity and an ability to see a future where public architecture is human centric.  The shortlist provides a strong link between architecture and ecology, indicating that there is desire to create a world that is more diverse and more sustainable.”

While all the shortlist projects are inspiring Bayham mentioned one project in particular, “From the Broken’ by Ashlee Murphy is a real stand-out project – architecture used to heal and renew. The conscience that is brought to this project shines a light on a societal scandal that needs more attention, this project has great awareness and compassion for its subject.”

Whatever the project subject or the design focus it is true to say that all of these students are on the pathway to stellar careers and Alspec is helping them to achieve their ambitions along the way.
