As the winner of The Building at the 2023 INDE.Awards, University of Queensland Cricket Club Maintenance Shed has paved the way for design that resonates with its surroundings and provides functionality at its best.
Designed by Lineburg Wang in collaboration with Steve Hunt Architect, this project, while simplistic in form, more than meets the brief and is singular in its design.
Partner of The Building category is Kaolin, who appreciate the gravitas of the project and applaud the innovation and detailing that make this project a winner.
The 2023 INDE jury remarked, “The University of Queensland Cricket Club Maintenance Shed shows progressive design at its best. With a breathable façade that becomes a decorative exterior layer, the design is simple in its complexity yet totally at home in its place.”
Located on the university campus, the shed provides storage and amenities for the University of Queensland’s Maintenance team and /Cricket Club. The building takes the form of a landscape wall rather than a typical utility shed. Sustainability initiatives include passive ventilation for toilets and tractors, and the design showcases the versatility of the block work.
With rising costs in construction and material supply constraints, standard grey blocks were chosen but reimagined as breezeblock walls and decorative screens. The blocks blend harmoniously with the surroundings and ensure that the structure is breathable. This shed is modest and intelligent, functional and appropriate and a trailblazer in its originality.
Congratulations to Lineburg Wang in collaboration with Steve Hunt Architect for their University of Queensland Cricket Club Maintenance Shed that provides for the community but also makes an indelible architectural statement.
