Shanghai Film Museum, which recently took home the 2014 Golden Pin Design Award, is the first of its kind in the city. Spanning 15,000 square metres and four floors, the museum tells the story of Shanghai filmmaking, from its beginning in 1896 until present day.
The promotion of dialogue is at the very core of the project.
As the first film museum in Shanghai, it takes its role in promoting the city’s film industry – and the industry as a whole – very seriously. Aside from 3,000 historic exhibits, the museum features 70 interactive installations that allow visitors to be active participants in the world of movies and movie-making.
The museum seamlessly integrates historical relics in interactive environments. Be it by dubbing classical films in a real sound studio, walking through a lifelike film set on Shanghai’s famous Nanjing Road or by becoming a star on the ‘Carpet of Lights’, where virtual fans and photographers flash their cameras trying to capture the ‘celebrity’ that just passed by; in the Shanghai Film Museum, visitors are actors instead of viewers.
Not just a temple to history, the museum also makes a conscious and clear link to the present and future of filmmaking by integrating fully equipped real-time production studios, in which visitors can participate in the craft of filmmaking. There are also DIY workshops, a 4D cinema, a multifunctional event space, a shop and a cafe.
